Couplers are mechanical devices that transfer control or torque from one shaft to the next, beginning with one shaft. Understand the many kinds of industrial couplings. Couplings are used when the poles are straight and need to be connected from beginning to end to transmit control. Robust materials like rubber can be stretched or compressed, or thin metallic discs or grids can flex, giving rise to flexible materials. Here mentioned are the different types of industrial couplings:

Sleeve coupling:

The most basic type of rigid-style connection is a sleeve coupling. It is made of a muff or hollow cylinder made of cast iron. When joined, its internal diameter is the same as the shafts’ external diameters. A gib head key is utilized to limit the relative motion and stop slippage between the shafts and the sleeves. Certain shafts and sleeve couplings are assembled with threaded holes that line up to stop the shafts from moving axially. The torque range for this shaft coupling is light to medium.

Flange coupling:

Like sleeve coupling, flange coupling is likewise simple to build. Here, the two sleeves are separated by flanges on either side. For bolting purposes, both flanges have the same number of threaded holes. Bolts and nuts are then used to secure the flanges together. The hub and shafts also have a critical area to ensure no slippage. This guarantees the hub remains fixed to the shafts and does not come loose or slide backwards.

Fluid coupling:

The turbine and the siphon constitute the two parts of the fluid coupling. The edges of each of these are fixed within a particular location. The torque limiter coupling is most used in industries. While the turbine is positioned on a designated shaft, the siphon is mounted on a portion of the setup. It is widely used in mechanical and maritime applications where regulated power transmission initiation is simple.

Roller chain coupling:

Two radially sprocket hubs engage a double-pitch roller chain strand in roller chain-type couplings. Applications requiring low to moderate torque and speed use chain connections. Torque is transmitted by the chain and sprocket teeth meshing, and the corresponding clearances allow for axial, parallel, and angular misalignment. Depending on the use, chain couplings need to be lubricated regularly. Typically, the lubricant is brushed onto the chain and kept on the coupling with a cover.

Gear coupling:

An additional modified version of the rib coupling is the equipment coupling. Unlike spine coupling, where the rib and centre are one item, apparatus coupling combines multiple pieces. In large applications with a greater need for torque transmission, apparatus couplings are used.

Servo couplings:

The servo coupling’s unique feature is that it can be assembled and disassembled without affecting the shaft’s condition. They are used for moderately fast, medium-to-rock-solid loads.
